The other day, it occurred to me that three of my friends have written books (or are in the process of doing so). In fact, around half of my friends write regularly in one form or another, but very few of them make money from it.
That’s not because they don’t want to make money from writing. Who wouldn’t like to earn extra income doing what they love? But the fact is, it’s very difficult to make a good living from writing for traditional media (books, magazines, etc.).
The sad fact is, most of us will never be JK Rowling, no matter how hard we work at it.
But blogs are different. With blogs, there’s no middlemen (publishers, agents, etc) wanting their cut. You can write about what you want, and you can write when you want.
There’s an old saying “There’s a book in everyone”, meaning that everybody has a story to tell. We all have some unique knowledge or experience that’s worth writing about, but the sad fact is writing a book is just to hard for most of us.
Then it struck me – if there’s a book in everyone, then surely there’s a blog in everyone too? I considered each of my friends in turn, and realised that they all had something interesting they could write about if they put their mind to it. And more to the point, so do you.
If you enjoy reading other people’s blogs. If you’ve ever considered writing your own blog, or even a book. If you want to write for a living, or just for fun. Then stop thinking about it and just do it! One of the great things about blogging is that it’s so easy to get started, it takes very little effort and it doesn’t cost you anything. Decide what you want to write about, set up a Wordpress or Blogger account and start today.
There really is a blog in everyone. Including you.

2I did start a blog on blogger but I keep reading that blogger doesn’t get much traffic. Does it really matter where you have your blog as long as you direct traffic to it? I look at wordpress and it just baffles me and blogger looked so much easier so I went with that one. Now I’m wondering if I made a mistake. What do you use?
