So it seems Google does listen to users occasionally…

Ten days ago I posted about changes to Google’s AdSense referral program. Google planned to reduce payments to American and Japanese publishers, and kick the rest of us out of the program entirely.

Today they’ve announced they’ve had a change of heart. Albeit a very minor one.

Basically, all publishers can now participate in the AdSense referral program, but you’ll only get paid for North American, Latin American or Japanese signups. And they actual payouts remain at the lower rate.

While I’m pleased Google has listened, this is still not good enough. They will still happily take all the traffic we send them (and make good money from it!), but not pay publishers for the traffic they send.

In my opinion, this is going to be even worse for publishers than just being kicked out entirely. People will still be tempted to participate in the referral program but could well end up receiving nothing at all for sending Google valuable new customers.

I for one will be avoiding Google referrals entirely from now on. It’s just not worth it.
