I love Wordpress. I know it has its critics, but there’s a reason why it’s used by all the top bloggers. It’s open source, regularly updated, and – most importantly – you can add extra functionality simply by dropping in plugins.
Now there are thousands of plugins available, so I thought I’d get together a list of what I’m currently using on Money Blogger
- Akismet
The essential anti-spam plugin that comes with the default Wordpress installation. Catches the vast majority of comment spam, so make sure it’s enabled! - Contact Form
This adds a configurable contact / feedback form, which I’m currently using here. - Feedburner Feedsmith
Redirects your RSS feed through Google’s Feedburner service, allowing you to track how many people are subscribed and a whole lot more besides - Google XML Sitemaps
Generates XML site maps that help Google (and other search engines) crawl your site. - Recent Posts
Simply shows a list of recent posts, as used over there on the right of the page. - Smart Archives
Generates a complete archive of all your blog posts on a single page.
I’m quite sure that this list will evolve over time, and I’m going to be trying out lots of new plugins and letting you know what I think anyway. In the mean time, leave a comment if you’ve got any essential Wordpress plugin recommendations of your own.

1You should also check out All-In-One SEO pack. It makes it a lot easier to get your posts indexed in Google.
I also like No-WWW or the opposite one that forces WWW. This also helps with SEO by preventing unintentional duplicate content.

I saw that your every post title link is attached with something like this http://www.moneyblogger.org/2007/10/15/essential-wordpress-plugins/. How did you do that?

4esmond: That’s an option in Wordpress (under Options -> Permalinks). You can basically set the URL structure to be anything you like, but for SEO purposes, it’s always good to have the title of your post in the link.

5dom, no matter what options I choose in Wordpress (Options -> Permalinks), it is not working for me. It will display “The Page cannot be found”. So, I just revert it to the default options which is the ugly one. I heard that only Apache window hosting can support that permalink kind of features. Is that true? Because currently I am using Window Sever hosting.
