Not too long ago, I found myself in a bad situation. I had a terrible credit score. It was a tough time for me – I honestly had no idea how I was going to dig out of that mess. I didn’t want to be one of those people who could never own a home. I wanted to fix things.

My biggest problem was that I couldn’t get credit cards. This was of course my own fault but I had commited to change things. That said, there weren’t any card companies who would give me a chance anymore.

It was about that time that I started to hear about secured credit cards. They sounded like they were a legit possibility for me but I didn’t know if you could use secured cards to boost your credit rating. After some thorough investigation, I discovered that many companies that offer secured cards report to credit bureaus so as long as you make your payments on time, they will indeed help your credit.

In my experience, it didn’t take long to pay dividends. Within about six months I was able to start taking out regular credit cards. This was a huge relief – I was afraid that I would never again be able to get lines of credit.

That was all a few years ago. I now have pretty great credit and I’m pretty glad that I took out a secured card. Of course, none of this would have worked if I hadn’t been determined to make all of my payments on time. The situation could in all reality get quite a bit worse if people took out these cards and then didn’t make their payments.

These cards work because they help you to show that you care about making on-time payments. If you start making your payments late they will of course have the opposite effect. You should also make sure that you never use more than 30% of your available credit. If you do, this will bring your score down and will make it harder for you to get unsecured credit cards. Since that’s the goal, manage your credit wisely.

Hopefully this lesson provided some help to those of you who are going through things that I am very familiar with. I know what it’s like and honestly hope that this helps each of you out.
